What is Virtual Reality (VR)?
VR is the computer-generated simulation of a 3D environment that can be interacted with in a seemingly real way using special equipment, such as goggles with a screen inside.
How can I watch VR with my phone?
You can watch Youtube-360 experiences on your phone. If you have a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 or Galaxy S6 you can insert your phone in the Samsung VR Gear and watch the VR experiences through the headset.
How can I film VR videos?
You can film 360-degrees videos with 6-7-12 GoPro cameras placed in a special manufactured holder. After you have shot your 360-degree video, you will need to stitch your videos together with special developed software.
What is augmented reality and what is the difference between with virtual reality?
Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect, view of a physical, real-world environment whose elements/objects are augmented by computer-generated sensory input such as sound, video, or graphics. AR is the blending of virtual reality and real life. Users are able to interact with virtual elements in the real world. The difference with VR is that AR users continue to be in touch with the real world while interacting with virtual objects/elements around them. With VR, the user is immersed in a world that is completely fabricated and the user feels isolated from the real world.
What are the difference between these VR headsets: Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard?
Oculus Rift DK1: Oculus Rift is one of the first virtual reality headset. The Rift is developed by 21-year-old engineer Palmer Luckey, funded via Kickstarter and bought by Facebook for $2bn. The Rift plugs into your computer's DVI and USB ports and tracks your head movements to provide 3D imagery to its stereo screens. The first consumer edition is set to ship in the first quarter of 2016, with two wireless Oculus Touch controllers to allow hand tracking, and Xbox One control pad compatibility.
Samsung Gear VR: Gear VR is a virtual reality device developed by Samsung in collaboration with Oculus VR and is one of the best all-round and consumer friendly headset on the market. The Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (or Galaxy S6) is used as the screen and driving computer, mounted inside the Gear VR device. The Gear VR has no display itself but has multiple input methods and a headband to keep the device on people's heads.
Google Cardboard: Like the Samsung Gear VR, Google Cardboard does not have a display itself. You put your smartphone into the cardboard container and then you watch the VR experience. There is no headband to keep the cardboard to your head. It’s a low-cost way to experience virtual reality.
