Frequently Asked Questions

What is Circos?

Circos is the only search engine that uses complex algorithms to understand the actual meaning of words and the people who write them. We scour the web for reviews, blogs, and recommendations about places, products and services, and our algorithms understand the words in context. When you ask Circos for a 'hip hotel,' we know you mean 'cool' and 'edgy'. We also learn something about you: you are young, well-traveled, and stylish. With this in mind, we return only those hotels that other people, just like you, think are cool and hip. Try it. It will change your attitude about search.

How is Circos different from other search engines?

Most search engines today return thousands of web pages to you – that may or may not contain the answer you need. These results are based on what's popular, not necessarily what's right for you.

Circos returns a small number of actual answers to your search requests, rather than links to Web pages that might contain an answer. We want you to search in the same way you would ask for a recommendation from a friend – with colorful descriptions.

Where do the results come from?

Circos intelligently crawls the Web, tapping into hundreds of influential sources, including blogs, online communities, forums, and review sites. Our technology brings all of these distributed opinions together under each product's brand name. Results on Circos represent the collective wisdom of consumers that have an observable history with the brands in a given category. You can think of this as the largest, qualified editorial staff on the planet, all working to give you a fair and balanced view.

Why should I trust the results?

Circos objectively ranks each brand based on what it's good it, and what it's not good at – as stated by thousands of consumers across the Web. To learn why a particular brand showed up in your search, you can always click on it to see why consumers like and dislike it. You can even learn more about each reviewer who has commented on a particular brand by clicking on their name.

And while it should go without saying, the order of Circos results is never altered by advertisements or sponsored listings.

Will there be other categories besides hotels and restaurants?

Yep. We're previewing Circos right now to help you find hotels and restaurants. But we're indexing the web to add on new lifestyle categories very soon. We'll also be adding in additional cities, so if you don't see yours yet, stay tuned. If you have a specific category or city you'd like to see added, drop us a line.

What does Circos mean?

Circos is a play on the Italian word cerco meaning "I search". We changed the 'e' to 'i' to represent Circos' me-centricity, and added an 's' to connote Circos being a place where many "I searches" happen.

I represent a brand. Can I sponsor my brand's result on Circos?

Yes, please email us at brands@circos.com for more information.

Who is behind Circos?

We're a team of entrepreneurs, technologists, and friends in California and Singapore out to change the way people find knowledge on the Web. You can find out more about us by reading our blog or the About Us page.

I've found an incorrect or strange result. What should I do?

Oops. Please email us and explain the incorrect result. We'll look into it. In the near future you'll be able to flag results that don't look correct. Thanks for pointing this out to us.

I've found a bug or problem. What should I do?

Please email us and describe the problem. We're a new technology and we appreciate your help and patience!

What does the * grade mean?

The * grade means that a brand doesn't have enough customer testimonials to receive a grade for what you searched for. Circos still displays the available customer reviews, but the brand won't receive a grade until more reviews are available.
